Whether it is a tilt-up garage door or a sectional door, to keep your garage door in optimal and functional condition, especially over the years, it is important to understand how to proceed with proper cleaning.
In this guide, you will find all the information on the products to use, the frequency, and the necessary tips on how and when to properly clean your garage door.
Cleaning Sectional and Tilt-Up Doors: When to Do It?
First of all, we recommend cleaning the garage door regularly, never neglecting the condition of the door because the accumulation of dust, dirt, and debris over time could compromise the mechanical functioning of the automated opening.
The recommended frequency for cleaning the garage door is once a month, especially in the periods before the coldest and hottest months.
When done regularly, these routine maintenance activities for the garage door ensure that the product remains in optimal and functional condition.
Cleaning Sectional and Tilt-Up Doors: What Products to Use?
For proper door cleaning, it is important to have the correct tools. Usually, it can be cleaned with water and neutral soap, while for cleaning wooden doors, it is advisable to use a water-based wood restorer. Never use alcohol on sectional doors.
Along with the gentle detergent, use clean, soft cloths that will not damage, scratch, or mar the surface of the garage door. A sponge can also be used: for example, some people choose car cleaning sponges available on the market.
How to Clean Your Garage Door in 5 Steps
Now that we have all the materials, we can start cleaning the door.
First, if there is an automated garage door, temporarily disconnect the power supply to avoid any accidents.
Before the actual washing phase, it is necessary to remove any dust and dirt accumulations, as dust particles could irreparably scratch the surface. Remove the dust from the sliding tracks and the inner surface with a brush or compressed air.
Once the dust is removed from the door, you can proceed with washing the surface. We recommend using 1 liter of hot water, 1 tablespoon of Marseille soap, and a microfiber cloth to wipe over the entire surface of the door.
After soaping the garage door, immediately rinse the surface with water and dry all surfaces with a cloth.
At this point, you can reconnect the power to the automated door. After washing the door, it is always advisable to perform a functionality test.
This way, the door will look as good as new!
How to Perform Proper Maintenance
To achieve smoother and quieter operation of the door, it is important that all its components maintain a certain level of lubrication, focusing maintenance on these four elements:
